One of the best things about Geography is that it’s a huge mind opener. Children thrive on it and soak everything up including languages and culture differences that become similarities. At QCPS, our lessons inspire a wonder of the natural environment such as rivers, mountains, hills, volcanoes and the effect of weather and climate. It also includes the effect that the environment continues to have on settlement and peoples’ daily lives.
Our broad syllabus endeavours to develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes.
Also, to understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time.
Our aim is to ensure we support the girls to become competent in the geographical skills needed to collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes. They learn to use an atlas, follow directions and other basic mapping skills differentiated and developed across the year groups.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
A variety of teaching approaches are used to ensure that the curriculum is accessible to all, with an emphasis on ‘hands-on’ learning. ICT is used frequently to develop research and note taking skills. As new educational apps are developed we look to integrate them into our weekly lessons to continue an inspirational curriculum for all. The skills learnt are transferable and give the girls the opportunity to reflect on the world and its diversity. Poverty, tourism and fair trade also enhance students’ social development. A sense of place requires a knowledge and understanding of the cultural traditions of the people who live there.
We take advantage of our local area and embrace the vast opportunities available on our door step. Activities include: trips to local farms, orienteering excursions, boat trips on the River Thames and a variety of excellent workshops and exhibitions provided by The Natural History Museum.
From cultural awareness to diving head first into new and exciting experiences, Geography can work wonders on the minds of young children. It’s a scholastic way to broaden their minds through complete immersion!
