PE, Games and Swimming
A high-quality and broad physical education syllabus inspires all pupils to succeed and take part in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. QCPS provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. At QCPS physical education aims to ensure that all pupils: develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and activities and lead healthy active lives.
We are fortunate to have access to outstanding off site sport facilities including Little Venice Sports Centre, Paddington Recreation Ground, Jubilee Sports Centre and Regent’s Park.
From Reception pupils have three lessons a week, two in our gym and one lesson a week at an offside facility which provides them with access to a large indoor sports hall and Astro turf for outside PE lessons. The girls enjoy exploring their spatial awareness, aesthetic movement and manipulative skills, gymnastics and coordination games to build on a broad set of skills.
Form I and II continue to have their PE lessons in our gym twice a week where they further develop their basic skills through simple team games as well as fitness and gymnastics. In the Summer Term girls do athletics and begin to use stop watches and measuring tapes to widen their understanding of different disciplines.
In the Prep School pupils learn to play a wide variety of seasonal sports, applying and developing a broader range of skills. They learn how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other whilst developing an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. Pupils are taught how to play competitive games including cricket, volleyball, fencing, netball, football, hockey, rounders and tennis. These sports apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
Pupils take part in swimming lessons where they learn to swim confidently over a distance of 25 metres using a range of strokes effectively. All students learn about safety around water and Form VI students also learn how to perform safe self-rescue in different water based situations.
Pupils take part in regular competitive fixtures, galas and tournaments in a variety of sports which challenges them both individually and within a team. This enables them to compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. It is an exciting time for sports at QCPS, as we start to prepare students for a wide range of competitive fixtures including IAPS competitions and the Westminster Primary Games.
